CHIROPRACTIC FOR BABIES & CHILDREN
WHY WOULD MY BABY NEED TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?
The birth process, even if completely natural, can be a very stressful experience for both baby and mother. There is an incredible amount of pressure placed on a baby’s head, neck and body during the pushing stage of labour. If the baby’s head or neck is even slightly tilted, it can place a huge amount of stress on their spinal joints, which have little muscle development to protect them. This stress can easily cause small misalignments of the baby’s vertebrae (spinal bones) which Chiropractors call subluxations.
Extended or difficult labours and those that involve interventions such as induction, forceps delivery, vacuum extraction or c-section can often cause even greater stress on the newborn’s delicate neck.
INTERESTING RESEARCH – Fryman examined 1250 babies 5 days after birth and found that 95% of the group were not only subluxated but also had cervical strain. He also noted that the infants showed immediate quietening, muscular relaxation and sleepiness after specific, gentle and precise Chiropractic treatment.
WHY WOULD MY CHILD NEED TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?
Children are very resilient, their bodies usually recover quickly and easily. However, every now and then, bumps, falls and jolts have a longer and more lasting effect on their body and possibly even their health. While a child’s spine is incredibly flexible and mobile, even minor stresses can impact the function of their spine, creating tension and spinal misalignment (commonly referred to as subluxations). Like with tooth decay, spinal problems can build up over time without you being aware of them. Patients are often shocked to learn that many of the cases of spinal degeneration seen in adults are the result of injuries that happen during childhood.
THE IMPACT OF SUBLUXATION IN CHILDREN
While subluxations can often impact the normal function of the body, organs and systems without obvious symptoms, there are often signs that indicate your child’s spine or nervous system may not be functioning at its best. These can include:
- Poor posture and or uneven shoulders
- Limited or restricted joint movement
- Restricted neck movements
- Flat feet, pigeon toes, knock knees
INTERESTING FACT – On average, a child before the age of 7 will fall about 2500 times and before the age of 3, will have had three major falls (off a change table, out of a cot, or down steps). It is estimated that 47.9% of children land on their head in their first year of life.
